The Truth About Cheap Design

One of the toughest issues that legitimate designers face these days is on the subject of pricing. An increasingly popular reason for this is due to the huge difference in pricing prospective clients hear when shopping around for a particular design project. If you’re unfamiliar with the process behind good, legitimate design, it probably seems a little confusing. For example, you might be shopping around for a logo for your new company. You decide to look for a graphic designer online and request a quote from a couple of designers who’s portfolio you like. But then, while searching for those designers, you see an ad for a website that offers logos for only $199. When you compare that amount to the proposals you get from the professional designers, you see a world of difference. The same is often true for the pricing you might get from certain “freelance designers”. Why is that? Why is there such a huge difference in price?

The oh so magical…Sight Specific

This past Friday we had the opportunity of seeing an amazing exhibition at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. Curated by our friend Freddy Jouwayed, Sight Specific was a magical tour of dream-like installations. Eleven South Florida artists were invited to create installations within the confines of a specified area. The mystical journey started for us as we stood in front of Mysterium by Clifton Childree. Then we drifted into the amazing trance-inducing video art by Juan Maristany to the groovy little glittery trees suspended in mid air by Wendy Wischer. The air was filled with Frozen Music, as if you were floating in outer space, or submerged under the ocean as Cluster Fuck by Gavin Perry hung above our heads. What a fantastic exhibition and we feel honored to have designed the flier for it, a tiny part of such an amazing installation journey.

Lord of the Laser

Our good friend Alessandro Gugliotta, owner of B-type Design, can wield a laser like a Jedi! Lucky for us, he uses his lasers for good instead of evil!

B-type Design uses their awesome laser cutting techniques to etch, burn or cut designs on pretty much any material you can think of. From marble to acrylic to hot dog buns…these guys can literally do almost anything. We recently used B-type to create our office signage, including a large SimpleFly logo for our reception area and the little dudes that let you know if you’re walking into the right bathroom.

Visual trickery on a Friday night.

Tomorrow night two of our friends will be featured at the 10th anniversary of Optic Nerve—an annual festival of short films and videos. Now in its tenth year, Optic Nerve features a juried collection of the best video art by South Florida artists. One of the films will be purchased for MOCA’s permanent collection.
